Monteiro Prestes
Biography
Born in Santana do Parnaiba, São Paulo, Brazil in 1958 Monteiro Prestes is a completely self-taught artist who abandoned his career as an engineer and business administrator to become a full-time artist specializing in oil painting. In 1977 Monteiro Prestes began experimenting with pen and ink sketches, and he quickly evolved to crayon in the early eighties. In 1989 he painted his first oil and by the early nineties Prestes was exhibiting his paintings in several solo and group shows throughout Brazil.
Classical, academic and neo-impressionist are of his favorite styles to paint, and his subjects are still life, landscapes, marine life, floral, nudes and interiors. His technique is totally sound and he has gained enormous respect within the profession, being a tutor for many renowned artists in Brazil and teaches several workshops for the most respected art galleries in São Paulo. Monteiro Prestes has also authored two instructional videos on the use of chiaroscuro and color.
This former engineer and business administrator has traded the lifeless world of numbers and calculus for the fascinating journeys through unknown lands: from sailing vessels, boats and caravels sailing in his Marine paintings, to Arabian scenery, moving from arid deserts to exuberant oasis, riding vigorous camels, then to English hunting parties and their trotting horses or to bucolic French landscapes. From Greek figures to the houses of Venice, passing by Holland’s flowering gardens and then to the dark studios of English basements where still life paintings are being created.
His brush strokes are firm, confident and distinct. His colors are warm, lively as nature. The brightness of his work is pure excitement. Each work is a masterpiece, his talent.
