Nicholas Roes
Biography
Nicholas D. Roes (b.1992) is a contemporary American painter based in New York. Born in Lowville, New York, he was raised on his family’s farm in the foothills of the Adirondacks, an environment that established an early connection to landscape, material, and the rhythms of rural life.
Roes studied Art and Education at Gordon College in Massachusetts, graduating in 2015. He spent four years as an educator in New England before returning to New York.
His painting moves between representation and abstraction, encompassing landscapes, architectural and agricultural subjects, coastal imagery, and nonobjective work. Across these approaches, Roes maintains an interest in place, memory, material, and the physical process of painting.
Artist Statement
Paintings are both an image and a record of its making. Moving between representation and abstraction, I am interested in how place, memory, and experience can be translated through color, form, surface, and movement.
Landscape has long provided a foundation, particularly the agricultural environments of my upbringing and the coastal and built environments I encountered while living in New England and New York. Some works condense these places into structured, hard-edge compositions; others move further into abstraction, where accumulated marks, shifting planes, texture, and traces of gesture become the subject themselves.
Across these different approaches, I am interested in the evidence of the artist’s presence—the decisions, revisions, movements, and material encounters that remain embedded in a finished painting. My background in agriculture, education, and the Mennonite tradition continues to inform an appreciation for process, restraint, repetition, and making by hand.
Influenced by American Modernism, Color Field painting, and postwar abstraction, my practice considers painting as a physical and visual language: a means of preserving a sense of place while also allowing memory, material, and process to reshape it.
