Biography
Salvador Dali was a renowned surrealist painter.
Born Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain, he displayed a great talent for art as a teenager. After his first exhibition at the age of 14, he enrolled at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. Introduced to the Surrealist movement by René Magritte and Joan Miró, his prior knowledge of Sigmund Freud’s theories fueled his rise.
Dalí’s artistic endeavors included painting, graphic arts, film, sculpture, design and photography, at times he worked collaboratively with other artists. He also wrote poetry, fiction, essays, criticism, and an autobiography. Thematically he oftentimes includes dreams, the subconscious, sexuality, religion, and science.
His eccentric and ostentatious public behavior often drew more attention than his artwork, to the dismay of those who held his work in high regard, and to the irritation of his critics.
Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the Reina Sofia National Museum in Madrid, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, among others.
