Andy Warhol defined the Pop Art Movement in the United States. He is known for works that mimic the style of advertisements, which at the time were viewed as a shocking embrace of “low art”. His most famous works include a series of Campbell’s Soup Cans, Electric Chairs, and celebrity portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, and Elvis Presley.

He responded to mass media culture in a unique way that captivated the public, as his fame grew, Warhol built a studio called The Factory on 47th street. There he found himself surrounded by an entourage of eccentrics he called the “Superstars,” with whom he created a number of experimental films, such as Sleep, Chelsea Girls, and Empire, which were banned by the police and labelled as ‘vulgar’.

A former member of Warhol’s entourage, attempted to kill the artist and others outside of The Factory in 1968. Narrowly surviving, Warhol withdrew from his circle and choose to focus on creating a series of celebrity portraits.

Warhol was a gay man who kept much of his private life a secret, with occasional references to his sexuality through art. He died at age 58 in 1987 due to complications following an operation. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others. A major retrospective of Warhol’s work took place at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York in 2019.
