Artist Statement

My work is influenced by time spent in between Italy and the United States. Immersed in the rich history of Italy, I find inspiration in the lavish medieval and Byzantine artwork, and the juxtaposition of contemporary minimalism. Combining ancient approaches with a contemporary aesthetic brings the past and the present together. Altarpieces by Cimabue, Giotto, as well as illuminated manuscripts, alongside contemporary artists like Makoto Fujimura and Bruce Herman, are some of the current sources of inspiration, as well as philosophical ideas from Pythagoras, such as the harmony of the spheres; where the heavenly directly affects the earthly in a concrete and mathematical way.

I explore the intersection of heaven and earth, the infinite with the finite, and how seemingly opposite concepts not only are connected, but essential, one to the other. Through metaphorical elements like gold leaf and raw wood panel, garden imagery, the reflection of past art methodologies while combining new aesthetics and approaches with old, I hope to bring to life these contrasts.

Many of the pieces I create are pure abstract works, or works that bridge the gap between abstraction and representationalism. It is my ultimate hope to bring both a personal understanding and interaction with these concepts as well as a communal one.
