Claude Monet
Biography
Claude Monet was a celebrated French painter known for his pioneering role in the development of Impressionism. The artist’s inimitable style is best remembered through the vivid depictions he produced of his flowering garden in Giverny.
In 1874, Monet created with Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas et Berthe Morisot the Société Anonyme des Artistes, which embraced the avant-garde techniques that were continually rejected by the salons; Monet’s famous work Impression, Sunrise was exhibited at their first group show.
His early life as an artist was fraught with financial stress. But he continued to move around Europe and paint. Frequently exhibited and successful later in life, Monet’s fame and popularity soared in the second half of the 20th century when he became one of the world’s most famous painters and a source of inspiration for burgeoning groups of artists.
He married Camille on 28 June 1870, just before the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War. They had two children. Camille died in 1879. In 1892 he married Alice Hoschedé. Alice died in 1911, and Monet’s eldest son, Jean, died in 1914. Around this time Monet’s eyesight began to fail with the development of cataracts. He found some relief later in 1922, with a new prescription and surgery. Monet died of lung cancer in 1926 at the age of 86.
Today, Monet’s works are held in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, among many others.
