Henry Spencer Moore
Biography

Henry Spencer Moore is considered to be one of Britain’s greatest artists of the twentieth century, known for monumental semi-abstract sculptures.

Moore was a pioneer, and the first British artist to become a global star in his own lifetime. His work came to symbolize post-war modernism. After training to be a teacher and serving in the British Army he studied at Leeds School of Art and then the Royal College of Art, London. By the 1950s Moore had begun to receive a number of international commissions. His work is attributed to spurring a British sculptural renaissance.

On 19 July 1929, Moore married Irina Radetsky, a painting student at the Royal College they had one daughter, Mary. Despite lucrative commissions, he lived frugally; most of the money he earned went towards endowing the Henry Moore Foundation, which continues to support education and promotion of the arts. Moore died on 31 August 1986 at his home in Perry Green.
